RE: RE: Vilnius to Stockholm Posted: Sat February 10, 2007 10:21 PM UTC
Hi,first of all,I want to introduce myself.I am a Malaysian student, currently studying medicine in Moscow,Russia.A few weeks ago I had made a trip from here to Stockholm via Vilnius. On the way back,we took a Tallink cruise from Stockholm to Tallinn, and took a bus ride from Tallinn to Vilnius, and from Vilnius, took our flight back to Moscow, and yes,we chose FlyLAL aka Lithuanian Airlines both ways.FYI,FlyLAL caters the CHEAPEST and the MOST FREQUENT flights between Moscow and Vilnius.Eventhough the aeroplane was small (SAAB2000),we felt really comfortable,as the seats were rather spacious!Food has to be purchased on board at reasonable price.I have nothing to complain about FlyLAL,as the cost was low,and yet the service was superb!
My point here is,as a well-established Muscovite here,I suggest you to start your journey from Stockholm, then to Helsinki,Tallinn (by cruises),Riga,Vilnius (by bus;visit www.eurolines.ee for more info) and if you wish,to Moscow on a FlyLAL flight, because I think from Singapore (remember that I am a Malaysian so I know your country well) you can find more frequent flights at flexible rates to Stockholm, compared to flights to Moscow.Another reason is,it is more difficult to enter Russia from your country of origin rather than from an ex-soviet country like Lithuania (believe me,I have experienced this all). However, there will be no problem to exit Russia (coming into Russia is NOT that easy!expect long queues and noosy officers at sheremetyevo 2).
Another thing I want to tell you is that,as a foreigner, please be careful while travelling in Moscow. We have been bashed up a few times already. So avoid the streets at night (travel in summer so you can get longer daytime),NEVER NEVER NEVER walk alone.Avoid large groups of Russian youths as they might be skinheads or hooligans.DO NOT come here on the week of Hitler's Birthday in May.Take a good care at your belongings especially in the crowds.Buy a handy Russian phrasebook as there is almost none of them speaks English.
I really enjoyed my trip to Scandinavia and the Baltic states. The people are VERY helpful and friendly. The cities and environments are beautiful. So I support your idea of going there. For more info about flyLAL,check out www.flylal.com/en .if you are interested on the the tallinn-riga-vilnius bus trips check out www.eurolines.ee .both have their own English versions.Have a nice trip!
