Dover Dover during Christmas
Posted: Wed December 20, 2006 01:33 PM UTC
I'm going to be in London over Christmas on vacation and I thought about going to Dover for a day trip on Christmas Day or the 26th since most of the attractions in London will be closed on those days but I'm not sure how to get there since all the rental car places I've contacted say they are out of cars. Any suggestions? Are the trains running on those days? Buses? I've seen pictures of Dover and I would love to visit for just a day (actually I would like to visit for more than a day but thats all I can do on this trip). If you can please give me the names of car rentals or other means to get there I would love it.

Thanks.

I think you're going to struggle with anything that involves using public transport. Certainly nothing will be running on Christmas Day (25th) and only limited services in some areas will run on Boxing Day (26th). I tried looking at www.nationalexpress.co.uk and www.nationalrail.co.uk and couldn't get anywhere trying to plan a journey from London to Dover.

In the press today it stated that there will be very few if any trains running from 8pm Christmas eve to 27th December whilst repair are undertaken on the railway system.

Hi
Not sure I would add Dover to my list of places to go, particularly in the winter. It has the cliffs but otherwise it's basically a port.
If you are looking for something to do then why not get a copy of the Time Out book of London walks? Great for seeing parts of London you might not have considered and it will work off those extra pounds after xmas.

I'll have to agree that a day trip to Dover in the winter when the wind blows and the rain pours down...and also not forgetting that all of Dover will be shut down aswell, would not be my idea of fun in any way. Stick to London and enjoy the river.

Hi, am so sorry i didnt see this before your trip, because Dover is well worth a visit - and is not "just a port".
Did you get down? Everywhere in England is closed on Christmas Day so i imagine you didnt. Do let me know if you get the chance to come again and id be happy to tell you all about what Dover has to offer.
As for it being cold in winter and the rain pouring down - its England! And the best weather is on the SE coast anyway!

Thanks for your reply. I didn't get a chance to see Dover but I did get to go to Salisbury, Bath, and to see Stonehenge. I didn't want to leave England. I wish I could move there. When I get to go back to England I'll look forward to your thoughts on visiting Dover. Thanks.
