well, i study social anthropology and it came up in one of our lectures. the lecturer said something along the lines of people dont get married, or maybe it was that their version of marriage on tory island equated to a relationship similar to boyfreind-girlfreind. maybe it was like that in the past then?

It sounds like they're referring to Pre-Christian times.

Under Irish law, if a couple want to get married, they have to go through a wedding ceremony whether it takes place in a church or in a registry office. Given that Tory Island is strongly Catholic, merely living together would not have been acceptable until the late 20thC.

Tory has a number of peculiar customs (including a King!) and plenty of myth and legend, including a warship that was sent to the island to collect taxes, or put a garrison on the island or impose law (not sure which,) but what caused the ship to sink is the stuff of legend.
As said already though, the laws of Ireland, including those referring to marriage apply on Tory, though it has a population of less than 200 (so probably not too many weddings...

not in the modern day !

other laws are blatently disregarded, but none that actually matter. Licensing laws are 'flexible' and none of the cars are taxed / insured. they sent a policeman over a few years ago, but he had to return to the mainland after a few months and be pensioned off as a chronic alcoholic.
