Inverness Flight information: Best way from NY to Inverness
Posted: Thu December 14, 2006 01:29 PM UTC
HI All, Need some help with the best connection from NY or Newark to Inverness.
I noticed a lot of the flights go from NY to London Heathrow and connect to
Gatwick to Inverness. Is there a better way? $$ is also a concern. Also,
is there a train pass for inverness for students? We are a group of 30 or so.
Thanks, Sandy

Avoid Heathrow at all costs.

transfer LHR-LGW is a potential nightmare.

Try this:

Continental fly direct from Newark to Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The train journey from Edinburgh to Inverness is through stunning Highland scenery.

ScotRail“s website isn“t helpful on such large groups, but if you contact them scotrail.enquiries@firstgroup.com I“m sure they“d be pleased to help.

If you have to fly to Heathrow (and you quite probably will) then make sure you allow plenty of time to transfer for an onward flight from Gatwick (far more than you might expect, to allow for transport congestion/late arrivals etc). Details on this link: www.londontoolkit.com/travel/heathrow_gatwick_transfer.htm

They suggest a minimum of 3 hours, but I'd go for a minimum of 6 personally, to be on the safe side.

The train journey is superb, but lengthy. www.nationalrail.co.uk for times and fares. You may find you will have to stay overnight in London if you choose not to fly (unless you decide to book on the overnight sleeper train, which won't be cheap).

You can get a group discount on the train fare. Look at www.firstgroup.com/scotrail/content/travelinfo/ticketsandfares.php?pageid=00000000020&ms=sub

I'd disagree that the sleepers can be expensive. There are bargain berths to be had starting at £19.

You can also use Traveline to plan journeys to/from Scotland.

We had no trouble flying into Edinburgh Airport from LAX. It's a lovely little airport, very friendly and easy to get to Inverness from there.

Avoid Heathrow at all costs. It's a nasty airport. It was actually cheaper for us to fly into Edinburgh, not to mention, more convenient.

Hi,
I aggree avoid the London airports when at all possible. Also if you fly from Newark to London you will actually pass over Scotland get to London an dthen have to come back again.
If it was me I would fly Newark to Edinburgh, stay a day and then take the train North to Inverness. I would try to get on one of the through trains from London to Inverness that stop at Edinburgh they are run by GNER http://www.gner.co.uk/ and are quieter and nicer inside. I do not think it costs any more to travel with GNER and I think scot rail tickets are valid on GNER trains.

regards
Doug
