If you have to fly to Heathrow (and you quite probably will) then make sure you allow plenty of time to transfer for an onward flight from Gatwick (far more than you might expect, to allow for transport congestion/late arrivals etc). Details on this link: www.londontoolkit.com/travel/heathrow_gatwick_transfer.htm
They suggest a minimum of 3 hours, but I'd go for a minimum of 6 personally, to be on the safe side.
The train journey is superb, but lengthy. www.nationalrail.co.uk for times and fares. You may find you will have to stay overnight in London if you choose not to fly (unless you decide to book on the overnight sleeper train, which won't be cheap).
You can get a group discount on the train fare. Look at www.firstgroup.com/scotrail/content/travelinfo/ticketsandfares.php?pageid=00000000020&ms=sub
