hi
rijksmuseum area is ok
streets like
pc hoofdstraat
jan van luykenstraat
near concerthall
j.w. brouwerstraat
wanningstraat
the only thing is where is a lot of tourist there are most of the times pickpockets.
if you look for a hostel i think the one at zandpad (more info on my amsterdam page)
some names of hotels in museum area are
acro
smith
park hotel
i dont know the prices.
if you have more questions email me.
i dont like the central station area or the red light district to stay to visit it is ok but i think better not alone.

I don't think any place in Amsterdam is actively unsafe, but in the neighborhood of the station and the whole length of the Damrak you'll be hassled by junkies panhandling for change, and in the summer especially it's noisy and rowdy and very crowded. The redlight district is interesting and not particularly unsafe, but a woman alone would probably not feel comfortable. And of course these areas are the worst for pickpockets.

For about 75 Euro for a double including a pretty decent breakfast, I'd recommend staying at the Hotel Keizershof located in a in a 17th-century canal house near just about everything. This is where we stayed, and it was perfect.

Enjoy your trip! By the way, I just have to say that you live in one of my most favorite cities in the entire world!

Look at http://www.virtualtourist.com/vt/71211/8/ for Amsterdam's Warnings and Dangers. As Tip Grouper I see mixed reactions from visitors and I'm not happy with the bad experiences some VT-members had.

Take care! PJ
