Hi there,
thankyou for recommending the site. However it does say that the train journey will take 11hrs from Almeria to Barcelona..I did think it was a lot closer.. can you recommend an airline for cheap internal flights?

thanks again

Hi JasmineRose
Dunno who are you saying "thanks" but I'm able to help too

Spain is bigger than some think, and Barcelona and Almeria are nearly in the opposite sides of the Iberian Peninsula (North and South). Never took the train, but driving from Barcelona to Almeria last Easter, on our way to Morocco, was about 10 hours (by highway and nearly non-stop! we were 4 of us driving in turns to do it as fast as possible). So I did even expect the train journey being longer than 11 hours :)

As far I know only Iberia has direct flights to Almeria, is not a "cheap" airline but sometimes there are good deals.

There are more options flying to Malaga with Iberia, Spanair, Vueling and maybe Air-Europa. But take into account that Malaga is about 2 hours driving to Almeria... as said, everything looks closer in the map! :)

I definitely second the airlines, but in particular Vueling - they now have flights to Malaga - of course that will leave you having to go from Malaga to Almeria. Not sure about Iberia's schedule or if they go to Almeria.

Assuming perhaps you are on a business trip? Last year when I was in the beautiful area collectively referred to as Spain, some of my best memories are in the train. We got hugs from three ladies from Murcia who were going to a hospital in Pamplona, kisses from an 85-year old lady (looked more than 60) and a young fellow who we were riding with (well, we actually had our little train party), had to deal with a cute little galician gentleman who refused to give up his seat (we had it reserved and if he did not move he would not end up in Vigo), and had a lovely time on the way to ACoruna with a lady attending a conference who offered her Serrano and bread, and we shared some of our Rioja. I am really a shy person - something magic happens when I'm up there - always! Sadly we practically ran thru Barcelona this time (got in at midnight and took the noon train to San Sebastian). Ah, got to hear Winnie the Pooh in Catalan. What a great time. Sorry, should have posted this on my travel experiences - got carried away.

It takes so long because it's more than 800 Km away, even taking the shortest route. And beacuse Almeria it's not a major destination from the North of Spain, so there is no demand for fastest trains.

Mui Gracias for your help and advice here.

Luckily I was able to finally get to Barcelona and have just has the most amazing 8 days here (am flying back to England in the next few hours).

I love it here and am thinking of coming to teach English in September. Anyone know of any colleges looking for a graduate with a tefl diploma, and 12 months teaching experience?

hasta pronto*
