Am thinking of crossing from Vietnam to Kunming at Lao Cai/Hekou, but I've heard the train doesn't run thru there anymore. Anyone know? Is there an alternative, e.g. train to border, then bus?

No, just bus to Hekou and then cross the border overland, then bus again.
