The prettiest/most popular parts of Bristol seem to be immediately north and west of the city centre - Clifton, Redland, Cotham, Montpellier - lots of parks, larger houses and lots of accommodation for the university students.

If you go east or south the areas tend to get a bit rougher around the edges, but the accommodation can be cheaper as a consequence. That is a generalisation, of course, there are one or two delightful character areas.
