| Mount Everest | Kala Pattar or True EBC Posted: Wed December 13, 2006 12:17 AM UTC
Hi guys !
I am experienced trekker would like to trekking on EBC next april. I have 3 weeks schedule which the goal will be stand in Kala Pattar. But since I learned that Kala Pattar is not the true EBC so I decided to go little bit further. The questions is : how long it will take to True EBC back to Gorak Shep. Should I go to Kala Pattar heading back Gorak Shep and make a push to EBC. Appreciate for any suggestion .... http://ambarbriastuti.blogspot.com |

Hi
As Long as you are fairly fit then If you stay at Gorak Shep, you will Easily be able to do Kala Pattar, Back down and then onto EBC and either back Gorak Shep or even down to Lobuje in the same day. by the way -- Did you know that Gorak Shep was base camp for some Everest Expeditions -- it was called "Lake camp" Sadly when I was there the lake had dried up so I hope that it is there when you go :-) Happy Travels Rob

| Mount Everest | RE: RE: Kala Pattar or True EBC Posted: Fri December 15, 2006 06:11 AM UTC Thankyou Into Thin Air Oh yes I read that Gorak Shep now is dry lake, is it any accommodation there. I am digging other people's pictures and see a comfy teahouse there. It looked like we have to set off early morning to reach EBC and back to Gorak Shep even down again. How long it will take? Regards Amb

I wouldn't say that Gorak Shep was exactly comfortable as it is so high don't expect to have a good nights sleep !! --- When I did the trek (Febuary) Gorak Shep was closed so we set off from Lobuje and walked to the top of Kala Pattar and back to Lobuje, Even taking a slight detour to the Glass Pyramid (Acute Mountain Sickness Research Centre) in an Easy Day.
So I think if you get up Early at Gorak Shep, you should be on top of Kala Pattar in not much more then an hour, then return to Gorak Shep for an early lunch / late breakfast and head off to EBC, Then return a final time to Gorak Shep, pick up your bags and head on down to Lobuje and have a slightly better nights sleep !! -- Or that's the way I would do it, maybe 8 hours walking in total -- less if you Yomp !! Happy Trekking Rob

I read that Gorak Shep used to be a basecamp from early everest expedition. I thought the Swiss expedition a year before British 1953 success (not sure). I tried to manage trekking outside Nepal but seemed like the price is rocketing. Do you know what the best offer I can get for 14 days trekking? I supposed to be no need addition equipment as I had it all.

All the treks that I have done have been independent Tea House Trekking, As you say that you are an Experienced Trekker then there is no real need to join an organised group, Lonely Planet Thorn Trees is a good starting point to find a trek-mate, Otherwise it is fairly easy to find people to go along with once you arrive in Kathmandu, Myself , when I did the Khumba Trek, I set off from Jiri with a friend from England but he got ill and we left him at Lukla to fly out and I teamed up with a couple of Ozzie lads that we had met on the Jiri Bus !! Lots of people wil be doing the trek in April and hooking up with someone shouldn't be a problem -- Picking the wrong guide / trekking agent would be !!

hello ambree,
i think its if you go independent. you can hire aa porter and stay in tea house. its not that difficult that u need some professional company or something like that. we r 3 guys going tobase camp in last week of feb or can say 1st week of march, v r going independent only. there u will find good porters in lukla and can choose the best option. I think it gets chep to go like this. please feel free to ask me any queries. sidhs.

In fact, Gorak Shep was the Base Camp for the successful 1953 Expedition of Norgay and Hillary.
