how long a drive would it take to get from amsterdam(city cener) to leiden??

is there and age requirement to rent a car in the netherlands??

Let me first ask why?

It's a 15 minute train ride.

You won't clear cental Amsterdam in that.

From the point that you are on the highway of Amsterdam its indeed 15min. by car to Leiden (exit highway). But to get out of Amsterdam city centre to get to the higway can take 30 min. To enter Leiden from the exit of the highway to Leiden citycentre can take 15 min. (if there are no traffic jams on the highway). So calculate for approx. 1 hr. To really get from city centre to city centre.

For renting a car in the Netherlands you must be 21 years old and have your drivers license for 1 year.

The train from Amsterdam Central to Leiden Central is 30 min.

Some companies have a 25 year age limit; check in advance.

I don't know were you want to go in Leiden, but the old city-centre is hardly accessible by car. Many of the old streets are to narrow to drive through, you'll have to mind the many cyclists and it's difficult and expensive to find a place to park your car. You'll probably end up in parking your car somewhere out of the centre and then walk to your destination. So take the train. If you are not convinced yet: there is a parking lot/transferium with bus service into town along the express way from Amsterdam.
