Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Ottawa Affordable rooms in Ottawa???
Posted: Wed July 23, 2003 07:18 PM UTC
Hi,

we'll visit Ontario in September and are looking for rooms in Ottawa. But all I find on the internet seems to be a bit expensive.

Does anybody has suggestions where to stay (motel or B&B) for reasonable prices?

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

It is difficult to find cheap accomodations in Ottawa - I think that there is only one hostel, but I would not reccomend it.

Try this site for B&Bs:

There are some motels or cheaper hotels: try either the Embassy West or the Macy's Best Western (both on Carling Ave.) I think that they have rooms starting at about 75CAD/night

good luck!

hi Bernd
Great family suites for Cdn$89 at the Cartier Place on Cooper Street. Excellent location. Here's a link to it (I hope!)

I stayed at a hostel in Ottawa (it's in an old jail building which makes for some interesting interiors) and it was fine. People were friendly, relatively clean. I think I stayed in a private room, but can't remember as it was only for a couple nights and 2-3 years ago. If you're looking for low price over luxury, it's probably the cheapest.

If you're interested in a hostel, there is another one besides the old jail. Ottawa Backpackers' Inn on York St. is quite decent and run by very friendly people. It's right near all the downtown stuff, but doesn't feel like it because it's on a quiet part of the street. I've stayed there a couple times, last time was in May, and I highly recommend it. You can ask about private rooms too. www.ottawahostel.com

"Affordable rooms" and "Ottawa" does sound like a contradiction in terms - there's relatively little worthwhile available under $100.

There's a two-star B&B (voyageur guest house) behind the main bus station for just over $50 and at least one or two B&B's on the Hull Québec side in that price range.

For motels, even the worst ones start around $60-70; there are many cheap ones on Montréal Road (not the best area of Ottawa, but you will find something for $60) and a couple west of downtown (Webb's on Carling is under-$80 but won't rent without a charge card because someone wandered off with two of their TV sets, Richmond Plaza at 238 Richmond is $74 but the windows don't open anymore and even the non-smoking rooms smell of stale tobacco). There are some better ones in the Carling/Kirkwood area or east of downtown near the 417 but they're $100 and up.

There's also at least one (Stardust, $70) out Carling Ave (west) near the Bayshore mall.

Out old Hwy 16 (south of town) there's Travellers Haven ($60 motel, $80 cabin) and Rideau Heights ($80-100).

There is a good Travelodge east of the city on the 417 which costs about $100 and is best suited to car travel.

There are plenty of Ottawa options in the higher price ranges (well over $C100) but at the low end it's rather slim pickings.
