I will travel to Bangkok with friend on 10th December- Phu Quoc is looking like our end destination - like to go via angkor and maybe stop for a few days at a beach in cambodia. Any tips on where to stay and which route? Trying to avoid slumming it too much(too old for that nowadays!)

Apart from doing a fairly grueling overland trip, your best option to get to Phu Quoc is to fly from HCMC. Even tho not far from cambodia, there is not a sea link as yet (though plans under way to correct this

As far as staying in Phu Quoc, I enjoyed the Tropicana, despite it's cheesy name!

La Veranda is the best in town now.
