Way back in August 1975 I was lucky enough to go to Anguilla just for a few days. I remember an amazing sailboat race that set off from Sandy Ground. I think the idea was to sail as far as the horizon and then return back to the bay. The boats had enormous sails ( I think they are called spinnakers) which helped them gain a speed advantage over the competitors.
Meanwhile back on the beach the spectators just got more amd more merry from the beers everyone was downing. It was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
I wonder if they still hold the race?

Hi ex-Mainer,
many thanks for the link. I enjoyed the YouTube video clip. The brief shots of the island helped me to remember how wonderful it was.
Your account and those of the others in the forum make it sound as though the island has escaped the excesses of commercial development. Back in 1975 I don't think there were any hotels - maybe just a small B&B. I remember there was a street carnival on the Saturday. The Carnival queen sat atop a bright red telephone because the event had been sponsored by Cable and Wireless plc. The steel drums and the marching band were just terrific. I loved it.
Maybe we should save up and I'll take my wife there - once the kids have left home. We can dream.....
Best wishes,
Mike

Hi exMainer,
It's really good to know that Anguilla has not been overrun by tourists.
Sorry but I don't remember eating at Smokeys. Unfortunately I was only on Anguilla for a few days. I'd been staying on St Kitts and we ( there were 6 of us) travelled on deck overnight on a sailing boat carrying a cargo of Sugar bags. In the morning when the sun came up and we were cruising over the crystal blue sea I thought I was in heaven. I was only 20 years of age at the time and was a student doing my university project which involved a lot of snorkelling. I was studying Zoology.
The whole trip was such a great experience for us. In all we spent 7 weeks in the eastern Caribbean over the summer. After a trip like that it is hardly surprising that I've loved travelling and exploring new places.
Now that our children are growing up we're able to branch out a bit and travel further afield. In fact next week we're going to northern Cyprus for a week. Somehow I doubt if it will be as warm as Anguilla or as laid back but I'm sure it will be fun.
I'm new to VT and I think it's great - definitely in danger of getting hooked!
Best wishes,
Mike
