I am trying to book a hotel room in Koh Samet from Dec 29 to Jan 2 but all the hotels contacted are full. A couple of them have availability but their rates are prohibitive, over 10,000 Bath. Any ideas & suggestions on a decent hotel are welcome! Thanks!

It's part of the busiest 2 weeks of the year in Thailand, it's no wonder you're having trouble. If you want to take a chance and go without a reservation, when you get to Ban Phe where you catch the ferry, you'll find some people offering rental assistance near the ticket office for the ferry. They will know what's available and will call across to make a reservation for you. Take along a list of the hotels that interest you.

Thanks for the prompt reply! It may be risky though to drive all the way from BKK....what arethe chances to get a deal there?

My colleague has always found accommodation, every time he has been. Even during high season, 500-1,000 baht.

I guess you'll just have to take what you can get. Unfortunately it's the price you pay for not having made a reservation earlier. If there's nothing available you can always backtrack to Pattaya.
