San Giovanni Rotondo Can you see the site of the hospital from the Convent of the Capuchin Friars?
Posted: Tue November 28, 2006 06:04 PM UTC
I'm working on a book and have a scene at the site of the Convent of the Capuchin Friars where Padre Pio celebrated Mass. I'm wondering if the site of the hospital for suffering that the Padre founded can be seen from the site of the convent.

I've only been to the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie and don't recall the locations of either of the places you mention, but there is a map/satellite view on here http://www.sacred-destinations.com/italy/san-giovanni-rotondo-padre-pio-shrine.htm
Within the town it is quite difficult to see anything from anywhere because it is on a hill and things are hidden around corners but the convent is apparently some distance from the town (a bus ride away) and it may make a difference whether you are talking about the monastery that was transformed into the clinic of San Francesco or the later Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, see http://www.vocedipadrepio.com/eng/itinerarireligiosi.php

Thanks for the quick response. As I understand THE SHRINE OF SANTA MARIA DELLE GRAZIE is where Padre Pio used to say Mass. How far is that from San Giovanni Rotondo? The hospital for the suffering (Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza)is in a high part of the city I understand.

The old church and sanctuary is bang in the centre of the town in a warren of little streets, somewhat below the level of the car park where all the buses stop. The CSS (hospital) is apparently at Viale Capuccini 86 and there is a photo of the present structure on here http://www.sangiovannirotondohotel.com/san-giovanni-rotondo-cultura/san-giovanni-rotondo-strutture.html.
However, I have also found an address for the hospital at Piazzale S. Maria delle Grazie, and the Convento dei Frati Minori Cappuccini is also, on one of the Italian sites, given this location so both could be at the top of the town, but the Italian site I gave before said that the convent was "far from" San Giovanni Rotondo and even if they were at the same level, one might not be visible from the other! In this picture it looks a bit isolated http://www.sangiovannirotondohotel.com/san-giovanni-rotondo-cultura/san-giovanni-rotondo-chiese/san-giovanni-rotondo-convento-frati-minori-cappuccini.html
I think you will have to find a very good streetmap or else visit the place yourself - good luck!
