All this information can easily(?) be found on the German Railways website - www.bahn.de . You need to practice using it so that you can learn your options, pricings, potential discounts, etc.

Check www.vrn.de
This is local transport and day passes are usually the cheapest option. I explained the passes on my Mannheim page/transportation.

DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: Mannheim
To: Heidelberg

Mannheim and Heidelberg are both inside the same local public transport network, the VRN. A VRN ticket covers the S-Bahn, RegionalBahn (RB) and RegionalExpress (RE) trains between both cities. Plus all trams and buses in both cities.
http://www.vrn.de

VRN single ticket for zone Mannheim to zone Heidelberg is EUR 4,50.
VRN TICKET 24 (a 24 hours ticket) is EUR 8,00.
VRN TICKET 24 PLUS (a 24 hours mini group ticket for 2-5 persons) is EUR 12,50.

Please note that with these tickets you cannot use IC/EC or ICE trains.

Sorry Bill but this is a local transport (it's maximum 20 minutes by S-train) and in fact you might have trouble buying your ticket from a DB machine should you want to (even if its staff will still gladly sell it) as it is considered too local. I tried it from Speyer some weeks ago...

Hmmmn, I see that you are right...well, you can use www.bahn.de to see the trains, the timings, the types of trains, but you can't see the prices or buy using the Internet...well, I guess that proves that the price can't be very much, if the trip is only 13 minutes or so ;-)
