Københavns Amt Cost of living in Copenhagen
Posted: Thu November 23, 2006 11:50 AM UTC
Hi there,

I should be moving shortly to Copenhagen with my wife and two little children. I was wondering what would be a decent salary to live in a nice neighborood in the northern Copenhagen area, not necessarily in the city. I have really no idea what the cost of living is in Denmark, so any hint, info, tip, or link would be very appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Panele

Actually I was offered well below that sum, around 33k crowns (gross) per month... the job location is in the Sollerod area, which I believe is totally out of reach. Where would you suggest searching for an accomodation within our limits? I was thinking that the maximum we could spend on housing would be around 8000 crowns, would it be realistic?

Thanks again!

Actually, my employer would be offering support, they have a dedicated agency to help you find housing. What I am trying to understand is what the cost of a 2 or 3-bedroom flat, within reasonable distance from the job, would be... if it's too high compared to the salary, I just can't accept their offer (and I would be SO sorry!) :-)

Thanks!

Will you be taxed according to the Danish tax system? And are you looking for a flat or a house?
If you want to buy a place i guess in Copenhagen and the area north of copenhagen you should calculate around 3 million at least for a nice flat with 3 rooms...

Taxes are killing us you know:) You'd be paying 63% of your salary in taxes on the salary you are offered...There are various agencies who make a living of finding rental apartments for business people moving here... Maybe your company has any contact to some of those?? They might even be able to work some favourable agreement out for you!?

Good luck :)

Unfortunately I will be taxed with the "normal" system, I am not important enough to pay the low rate ;-)
About the tax rate, I was told by the company that the deduction should be around 50%, your 63% really scares me! I am offered just below 400k DKK, and I calculated about 16k net per month. But if the rate is higher, then it would be impossible to live for our family! Even with 50%, considering an expense of about 8k DKK for housing, we would be living with just more than 8k a month, and it doesn't sound much for 4 people!

For the time being, we don't plan on buying a house, as we don't know the places at all, maybe in a couple of years... we would like to find a flat, 2 or 3-bedroom. Lately I was told that the area more to the north (Frederiksborg Amt?) is much cheaper, and it still would be acceptable as distance from job.
The company has a rental agency that help employees to find an accomodation, so finding a house should be a bit less difficult, I hope.

63% taxes is NOT true. It might be true for what you earn over 350.000 Dkr, but not for your entire sallary. 50% is more likely to be true. Im sure that your emplyoer can help you with figuring out how much you need to pay.

Buying a house is expensensive. And since you are just mooving to DK its probably also a good idea to wait with that kind of investment - until youre settled in. Having an agency to help you finding a place to rent is a good idea. Its often more expensive rents, and maybe only for 1 year, but its safe and proffesional. 8000 Dkr. will properbly not get you anything big, but the further away you come from copehagen the better.

33.000 is as good sallary. Denmark is an expensive country, but many danes get by with half of your earnings. If your wife also can get a job you will be well off. To give you an idea of the prices: cook a meal to 4: 100-200 dkr. beer: 5 dkr. beer in resturant: 40 dkr. new car: from 100.000 Dkr. eat in fast food restutrant: 50 Dkr. Eat in Michelinstar resturant: 1000 Dkr, Milk 5 dkr., chocalate bar 7 Dkr., 10 km in commuter train: 30 dkr., new laptop: from 5.000 dkr., talk in mobiletlf: 0,80 pr minute, flowers for your wife: 100 dkr., theatre ticket: from 70 Dkr

Cyberelg, lots of useful info! I also checked the Netto site posted on another thread... I totally agree with you about buying a house, we first need to settle down and find an area we like, then we can think about buying. It will probably 1-2 years before we start thinking about it.
It's a relief to hear that this salary is enough to live on, if not to prosper ;-)
