Parking and transportation to airports LAX/LGB
Posted: Wed November 22, 2006 06:51 PM UTC
I'm making arrangements for my trip to NY for the holidays. I'm flying out of LGB, but haven't booked my return yet. I found a good deal coming back to LAX and am considering my options... I know parking rates are cheaper near LGB than LAX - what would be the least expensive way to get from LAX to LGB (to pick up my car on the return)?
In the past, I parked on the street for free near the Furama Hotel in Westchester and took their shuttle to LAX. That hotel has been torn down... Anyone know of any similar situations where I could park for free and take a hotel shuttle? to LGB or LAX? Free parking on a street within a 20 minute walk to LGB?

Thanks for your help.

The least expensive way to get from LAX to LGB would be to take a SuperShuttle.

Have you considered just renting a car on your return? Not sure if this would work out for you, but if the company will give you a rate without drop-off fees, this could be a good option. Will all depend on the rental car company.

If you are truly looking for the least expensive that would be public transportation. This is by no means the quickest or most convienent but it would get the job done.

The http://www.metro.net web site has a trip planner. As a check I put in LAX to Long Beach Airport, it came up with the following route. Estimated time 2 hours 47 minutes.

From LAX take the Airport Parking Shuttle to Long Term Parking Lot C
Take Metro Bus 232 and then transfer to Long Beach Transit 111.

This drops you right off at the Long Beach Terminal, you could also use the planner to put in the address of where your car will be and the time of day to get a more accurate route estimate.

I usually pay to park at LGB, b/c as Yubert writes, it's so cheap. It's a matter of the value of your time vs. your dollar.

SuperShuttle is thirty five bucks plus tip, so figure forty. That's six plus days of parking at Long Beach.

If you're still set on uber cheap; I recommend you look into a bus to LGB from the Blue Line. www.mta.net is great, but never manages to incorporate the rail lines in its recommendations. Therefore, the LAX Shuttle to Green Line to Blue Line to Bus/Airport might be a fairly speedy route, depending on the time of day.

I'll be looking into some of these ideas for my own LGB holiday travel, and I'll let you know if I find any amazing ideas.

Thank you all for your replies. I called Supershuttle and they told me the fare from LAX to LGB is $28. Although I'd like to save as much as possible, I'm arriving at LAX after 9pm so public transportation would not be an option for me. After getting my car at LGB, I would still need to drive another 1 1/2 hrs to Santa Barbara. So It seems the best option for me at the moment is Supershuttle.

If I can't get free parking near LGB, then I'm also considering taking the Santa Barbara Airbus from Santa Barbara to LAX $80 rdtrp). Then taking Supershuttle from LAX to LGB to catch my flight. If I drive and park in lot D at LGB for 13 days, it will cost me $78... that plus the shuttle, plus gas will cost more than the Airbus option. My flights are booked, so that's a done deal. I may wait until a day or 2 before to finally decide what I will do. If I can secure free parking near LGB that would be the best.

Yubert - I haven't asked jenn_d yet, but she has a lot going on right now - so I'm not sure if I will ask...

The Santa Barbara commute truly complicates and drives up the dollars. Let us know what you find out!

Trekker,

I researched this route for another forum poster, and here's what I found(copied my post over):

This has been a common question on here, as of late(I'm traveling soon, and need to know, as well).

Here's what I've come up with:

I've travelled from LAX via Metro, but to Hollywood, so I'm fairly familiar with the ride. At LAX, grab the free "Green Line Shuttle" which carries you one mile to the Metro Green Line(Light Rail). Take the Green Line East towards "Norwalk". Change to the Blue Line at "Imperial/Wilmington/Rosa Parks", towards "Long Beach".

This is where I haven't tested the route: At Willow, you can exit. You're not far from the airport, at this point. There may be cabs available during rush hour(the Blue Line is heavily travelled), or you may call and arrange for a cab while en route.

Here's the sad bus option that I copied from the MTA website:
.............................................................................
You are traveling on Wednesday and Arriving at 7:00AM . Fare class: Regular. Max walk: 1/3 Mile. Mode: ANY.

Tip: Click on a location to view on the map.

Starting at WILLOW ST/TERMINAL ISLAND FRWY
Ride LONG BEACH 102 (SPRING-TO TOWNE CTR) heading east
From: WILLOW ST/SANTA FE AV(SE corner)
To: SPRING/LAKEWOOD(SE corner)
Pay $0.90, Monthly Pass: $50.00, (EZ Pass accepted)
Ending at LONG BEACH AIRPORT
Total cash fare = $0.90
Trip distance is about 4.86 miles.
................................................................................
Frankly, I know this walk, and it seemed longer than that listed(1/3 of a mile is long with luggage). On the plus side, you can do this entire trip from LAX to LGB for $3.90 ($3/day pass from the MTA and 90 cents for the Long Beach bus).

Still, if I do this, I might opt for a taxi. I'll look into that, next.

Best,

GC
