Should not be a problem to get accommodation - as there is plenty in the town. We stayed at the Luang Prabang Bakery Guesthouse - which I found in the Lonely Planet on the flight over there - no problem getting a room - clean and very comfy - it cost AU$25 for a couple, with breakfast included. It was right beside the night market and Mount Phousi, and had a lovely restaurant.

I've spent 3 Xmas holidays in Luang Prabang and the bad news is that it's becoming quite a 'destination' for celebrating BUT the good news is that there are more moderate priced places opening up. The Luang Prabang Bakery and Restaurant Hotel [above] is right in the heart of the central area and every night they have the 'night market' extending all the way to directly in front.
If you want a slightly quieter place, you could also try Mano Guesthouse which is about a 15 minute walk from the 'downtown. Otherwise, for another U$15 you could get into some really nice places.

i agree with the above. keep in mind though if your coming downstream the mekong on the slow boat, its a bit of a mad rush amongst the tourists for a room. but i dont think you'll have any trouble
Vang Vieng is just as nice as LP, and 5-6 hours drive south...dont miss it

id say definetly..others might not. its easy going layed back with activities such as toobing down the mekong, cave exploring, plenty of resturants, bars and accomodation...and a giant rundown runway in the middle of town left by the americans...

Laos was such a pleasant surprise to me last time - so I am prepared to have a much better look this time. Nothing but pleasant surprises I'm sure.

I concur Luang Prabang Bakery Guesthouse is the place to go at that price range.
