I believe the recipe can be found here: http://www.agnet.org/library/article/pt2001028.html
It'd be much easier to look for them in Chinatown though ;-)

Unfortunately there is no Chinatown in Hannover. And I tried the Asia-Shops around, but no eggs.
Thanks for the link Ulrike

Btw, do not take too much of these at one go. It was once reported some of them had too much alkaline content which is not good for health!

Oh... this is one of my favourite food! As a coldcut, you can serve it with sliced sour giner. It's fantastic to put into pork/beef/fish congee. In winter, we also put it into water together with spring onions as a soup base of hot pot. Yummy!!!

There is no Chinatown in Germany at all. Theree some areas in the cities, where more Turkish people live then average, and maybe certain areas, where there are a few Asia-Shops and Chinese Restaurants - but no Chinatown!
Most Germans think these eggs are disgusting. But I miss them. When I was in Beijing last time I stayed at the Shangri La and one egg every morning for breakfdast.

The best preserved eggs - also known as century eggs - or in Chinese 'pei tarn' is from this restaurant in Hong Kong - yuen kee - they serve it as an appetiser while you wait for the proper meals...and yes you could have bought them home....they last for some time.
funny that you say there is no Chinatown in Germany. While I was in Germany, even in small town Kiel there were lots lots of Chinese restaurants...but I think more Thai restaurant. Perhaps it is the way you had asked them...next time if they speak Cantonese - ask for Pei Tarn, or Mandarin is called Pee Tanh. They are not placed with eggs usually, and each egg could be wrapped with paper. Although the old method was wrapped with soil and then something that hard covering looks like bird nest to me!!!
And apparently the old method was using animal (horse?) urine to preserve the eggs. Now after hearing this do you still wanna have more!!!!

i love "pei dan"!! i`m surprised that there is no chinatown in germany! wow! i thought there was at least one in every country :) if you see the eggs on a menu item in a chinese restaurant where you live, why don`t you ask the manager where he bought the eggs? or maybe you can buy a few off of him?? they are especially good with congee & fried cruller. my favorite! if you eat them plain, cut one open into slices & sprinkle a bit of sugar & little bit of soy sauce of it. yum!!

"Pee Dawn" (pi dan) is the proper Mandarin pronunciation Posted: Mon July 21, 2003 07:34 PM UTC
Your best bet is to find an Oriental grocery in Germany and inquire there. Chinese restaurants in Germany are not going to have this authentic dish, instead they serve fake Chinese food like sweet and sour pork with a neon red sauce or egg fu yung. I think your closest Chinatown would be Paris. I don't know any others in Europe aside from London. It's simply an urban myth that every large city has a Chinatown, but it's true that you can always find a Chinese restaurant.

Ulrike,
here is a link that I found in the net - it is in German only, but has a recipe for those eggs:
http://webkoch.de/rezept/41270.html
They use the ashes of the fir tree leaves....
If it works, let me know!!!

Audrey, the best "Pee Tan" is from Shanghai. I believe the Yung Kee Pee Tan are imported from Shanghai.
Ulrike, if you want, I can send you some Pee Tan from HK, provided that the German custom allow them to get in.
