| Canterbury | What About Purau? Posted: Fri November 17, 2006 11:08 PM UTC
I'm working on a novel. The main character lives in Purau and works on Mt. Evans.
Anyone want to fill me in on local customs, flora, fauna, weather & geology? ~ Alex |

Google Banks Peninsula and you may find something. If you use www.google.co.nz you can select New Zealand sites only. It's very small town. Another keyword would be Lyttleton Harbour, as it's on the edge of that.
Good luck!!

I've spent some time around Purau and my partner knows the area intimately. If you have any specific questions drop me an email.

Well, without going into all the specifics that will take months to search out, I really need as many personal, intimate responses to Purau and Mt. Evans as I can get--just individual responses to the area, earth, plants, animals, water, weather; but, to ask something specific that I still need a lot of personal, intimate responses to--what do you think/feel about the night sky down there?

I wonder why your main character lives in a real place you do not seem to know at all. Seems rather tricky to me. And what does the person work on Mt. Evans? Search a lost sheep or count the tussock grass balls? In fact, I have never seen anybody work on Mt. Evans, apart from sweating mountainbikers. Of those you can see a photo on:
http://www.mountainbike.orcon.net.nz/07MtEvans.htm Unfortunately my time is too limited to describe you all the things you want to know in detail. Sorry! But I would rather consider to invent a place than to write about a place you have not seen but other people will know and find the mistakes...

Your points are all well-taken.
Still, as an author, I have requirements for stories that "demand" things like writing about a place I've never been... As far as what the character works at on the mountain: the story begins in 2021 and there's an observatory at the peak but it, in no way, changes what the mountain looks like nor does the activity it spawns disturb the ecology... ~ Alex
