| Colombo | 3 Hours to tour Colombo! Posted: Fri November 17, 2006 03:20 PM UTC
Hi! I work as an assistant for a CEO in NYC who will have a layover with his girlfriend in Colombo for 3 hours before flying on to Delhi. Any suggestions for any sights in can see in and around the airport within that time? I know, crazy question, right?!

Bandaranaike International Airport is 30 Km from Colombo and that can take an hour each way (traffic aint good) so Colombo aint advisable.
The airport is like any other (not much to see inside) and none of Sri Lankas must see sights are nearby. He could take a walk outside but it is mainly security posts and a railroad line. He could pick up a taxi or three-wheeler outside the airport and grab a quick tour of Negombo (an old Dutch Fort and a Canal, not much else). You are never far from a Buddhist Temple in this part of the world and I would go for Angurukaramulla Temple, with its mega reclining Buddha. It is just a few km from the airport and easily reachable by three wheeler or taxi. There is no entry charge but Negombo is a tourist area so he might get leaned on for a donation. By the way, he can change money at the airport but will probably get by on dollars for a quick look round. Other VTers will be in soon, who may know this area better than me.

I found the airport to be very, very basic in 2003 & with the current hostilities security will be fairly tight at the airport.Bunkers al around the place. U don't say what time u arrive, my experience was that most international flights arrived in the middle of the night.... so sitting at the a/port might be your only option & a terrible one at that.
Shame, because there is some great shopping to be had in Colombo, design label clothes [Odels shopping centre] are made here & upto 80% cheaper than home.

The airport was indeed basic in 2003 but not anymore, building has been (and still is) going on at a tremendous rate, it is now a large modern and place (except baggage reclaim) and some of the staff even smile (except of course at immigration, where if they acknowledge you at all, it is a quick snare before they throw your passport back).
I never thought about arriving at night, good point.
