Bilbao airport is not linked to the City's transport network other than by a half-hourly bus service so your first task is to get to Bilbao. A taxi direct to the airport will be expensive. RENFE the National train service will be quickest but the local rail service of FEVE or the bus service of ALSA will be cheaper. All 3 have excellent websites which will show timetables and some proce information. The bus station for the airport bus connection is by San Mames and can be reached by the Bilbao Metro. As a rough guide I would say Taxi 70 Euros, RENFE 20 Euros, FEVE 15 Euros, ALSA 10 Euros. The bus to the airport takes about 30 minutes and is a bargain 1.30 Euro.

Do people take the bus even if they have heavy luggage?

Yes, people do ride the buses because most of the long distance ALSA buses are coaches and have luggage compartments underneath so there's plenty of room.
Some of the coaches are basic but for a few euros more some of the services also have toilet facilities. Not that coach toilet facilities are worth using anywhere unless you are really desperate but it's there for emergencies!
I've used ALSA on several routes and the standard of the buses/coaches is good. They are smart and clean and like an express coach in the UK stopping at major centres rather than every 200 yards.
