I would say Sikkim is absolutely safe to travel by road.
However, you may have to watch out if you are travelling at night through Bihar or other places which may be dangerous.

hi bimal,
Thnx for the advice. Yes we are thinking of it. we have to pass Maharashrta, M.P, U.P (not much),Bihar & W.B. M.S, M.P is fine, any idea abt the major towns where we could take a night halt while passing Bihar / W,B. We plan to take a 4 night halts, each at Maharashtra / M.P border, M.P / UP border, Bihar (mostly in patna)& W.B / Sikkim border. Any other road map suggestion will be welcomed. Thanks in adv. Santosh

try the TTK Road Atlas. Maurya and Chanakya are good hotels in Patna with Samrat to follow. But I would think many times befor driving through Bihar un escorted ( as in police) thru Bihar, any time of the day. I would have given it a miss. You should be adept at driving in challenging hilly terrains of Sikkim else it could be dangerous for you and others.

I don't know about other towns, but in West Bengal/Sikkim Border, you should take a break in Siliguri.
Its 4 Hrs from Gangtok. Worth relaxing before starting with the hilly terrain. In Siliguri, you could stay in Cinderella Hotel or Hotel Sinclairs. Both are nice hotels, though I would prefer Sinclairs. There are many budget hotels all around the city as well. What Rationalacts mentioned about driving in hilly areas is absolutely right. If you are not comfortable, hire a driver from Siliguri. Drivers are quite cheap in this region, and your hotel may be able to arrange one for you. Regarding the route, take any Road Guide and follow the highway.
