Laos is very cheap. You can get by fairly comfortably on about $20/day. 5 days isn't very long for Laos. There isn't much to see in Vientiane so you would be wise to spend most of your time in Luang Prabang.
If you wanted to get further afield, Nong Khiaw is about 4 hours north by road from there you can take a 1hr boat trip to Muang Ngoi Nuea, a pleasant little village on the Nam Ou River with guesthouses. http://www.travelsinasia.com/Laos/Laos.htm

Luang Prabang is beautiful, and well worth spending a few days. There is also a ecotouristm Gibbon Experience north of LP, where you stay in a tree resort and get around on ziplines - heard lots of good feedback on this from younger travellers. We stayed at the Luang Prabang Bakery Guesthouse, which was right beside the night market and Mt Phusi - very nice.

Google the Gibbon Experience - it is a resort built up in the trees, and you get around on ziplines! Not cheap by Asian standards - think its about US$120 for 4 days - but supposed to be an awesome experience.
Guesthouse was US$20 for the 2 of us - very clean and extremely well located - and, of course included breakfast!

With only 5 days, if you're going to 'do' the Gibbons Exprience, then there's no need to go thru Vientiane or Luang Prabang. You'd do better to enter via the northern most Thai-Lao border at Chiang Khong to Huay Xai. The Gibbons Experience is up in Bokeo Province so Huay Xai is the closest and fastest crossing from Thailand.
Otherwise, if you can afford to fly, I'd suggest flying into and out of Luang prabang and focus on spending your 5 days there and outlying daytrips.
