| Cadiz | Costa de la Luz in July: advice please Posted: Sat November 11, 2006 04:22 PM UTC
Hello,
I've managed to get myself COMPLETELY confused (possibly reading too much in too many places)! Now I have a few details too many and wonder if anyone can sort truth from rumor for me. I am traveling to Costa Luz next July with my husband and 3 grown children. We are not conservative or fussy travelers, enjoy new people, places and cultures. We are trying to decide whether to stay in Vejer de la Frontera or in Los Canos de Meca. We had heard that Los Canos might be a little to much of an inebriated party town for us--nothing against but maybe not 24 hour--and clogged with crowds and traffic during summer months. Vejer looks lovely, we love street wandering, and it seems like a short enough drive to explore the coast/various beaches. THEN I read that Vejer is too hot to sleep with no a/c in summer, AND that it swarms with mosquitos at night so no windows open. Can this all be true? We were very excited about possibility of visiting Costa Luz: lovely area by sea not yet completely populated by tourists while hosting a majority of local guests. Now we come upon dire warnings of being eaten by sand flies and buffeted by winds on coast or nibbled by mosquitos while expiring from heat up hill. The house we have become fond of in Vejer does not have a/c but says rooms are cool with thick walls. Any advice? Heat, mossies, winds, need a/c in Vejer, fine at night without? Must be on coast to get to beach because roads stand still in summer? Vejer close enough? All info and opinions welcome! Thank you, Diane |

I went to Vejer long ago. It is a very nice place to spend some days. I mean three or four days. Not far from that village there is a fine seaside village; Conil de la Frontera.

Another Option.
My family including our grandchildren (11 of us in total) stayed near Peutro da Santa Maria which lies across the bay from Cadiz. We all thought is was a wonderful place to stay. We were there in June, we saw one mosquito and no sand flies. We had an apartment in a newly developed area named Sherry Port and was 5 minutes from a very good beach. The apartment was booked via a agency run by an English lady centred in a bar called (i think) Emilio's bar. This is real Spain so no UK type outlets. Peurto Santa Maria is busy with bars and restaurants. Just in case it helps you can get a scheduled flight into Jeres or Seville, generally at good prices. Austin

Thank you so much. All very helpful information. At least I am happy about visiting the area once more and now have more choices there to consider.
Best, D

A Fellow Diane...
Vejer is just beautiful Diane you will love it - I think!!! I have only visited, but it has always been so lovely. I think the 3 grown children depending on age may find it a bit quiet. Los Canos I was only driving through once and it was more of a chilled out hippy style vibe going on - people hanging out in scooby do style camper vans but it wasn't high season. I am here in Cadiz and really appreciate being by the sea, so don't stay too long in Vejer, you might need a breath and a wee relax on the beach. As other people suggested Conil / El Puerto all lovely places. I can't think of a better place to be in July. Hope you enjoy it. Traveldix
