| Manchester | Restaurants in city centre Posted: Fri November 10, 2006 04:34 PM UTC
I would appreciate any suggestions/recommendations for reasonably priced restaurants in Manchester city centre - NOT a franchise. I am looking for somewhere where the emphasis is on good food and value for money, rather than show and a place to be seen.
Also, any suggestions for breakfast near the Travelodge City Centre? |

Nicky's sandwich bar does a good breakfast, there are a couple of branches; one on deansgate, another behind Kendalls.

there is a really nice armenian restaurant in peter square (or close by), its down some steps and not obvious, it does have a sign and a "sandwich board" outside, called armenian taverna (ok, so not the most imaginative name, but its tells you what it is) the puffy bread is great, and by fave, baba ganoosh YUMMY!!!

Suburb on Deansgate is the best coffee shop in town, always full of local art/photos and selling the best coffees in my opinion. A good place any time of the day, for breakfast, lunch or a snack. It's probably a 5-minute walk from your hotel, a few doors down from No 1 Deansgate tower (the 'cheese grater').
Further down Deansgate there are a couple great Turkish restaurants, my fave is Topkapi but there is also the Cafe Istanbul which is a bit flash. Have a hunt around on the sugarvine website for more recommendations and a price guide, unfortunately there are a lot of places like La Tasca, Est Est Est, Caffe Uno and other uppity chains moving in everywhere.

We really liked the Cafe Rouge, but I forget where it is. Somewhere near the Royal Exchange Theatre.

Sam's Chop House. It's a pub and restaurant. In my view it's one of Manchesters best eateries. All the food is home made. their steak and kidney pudding is to dies for. Not the cheapest - but one of the best.

Hi
If your staying in the Travel lodge city centre. You are actually staying in the City of Salford as the river is the boundary. Honest. That said you cant go wrong with the eateries on Deansgate. At lunch time ( Dinner to proper Mancunians ) try some of the local pubs all advertise in windows or on boards. You cant go wrong with Sams Chop House on Cross Street. However my place has got to be the English Lounge on high street behind the arndale. Theres a restaurant or you can eat at the tables in the bar. Enjoy
