| Lhasa | really too cold in january Posted: Fri November 10, 2006 02:31 PM UTC
I want to travel from lhasa to ktm in the middle of the winter, in mid january. In every guidebook it says this is not a good time to go, but what do you think, is it still possible, I mean, is there still some transport running. (I know that it will be cold)

Hi Max,
My name is Felipe and I saw your post about the winter in Lhasa. I'm intending to go to Lhasa on January 13. Do you have a group? My group is just myself and a friend of my, so it would be good to travel in a little bit bigger group. Anyway, if our schedule doesn't match, we still could share some information, tips, and routes. Please, reply to my at felipe.trevizan (AT) gmail.com Cheers, Felipe

The southern region of Tibet (from Lhasa to the Nepal border) is actually one of the mildest regions of Tibet in the winter. While it will be cold, it is nothing compared to the northern regions of Tibet. Most of southern Tibet is very dry in the winter. Seeing significant snowfall on the roads is very rare. Even at Everest Base Camp (el. 5200m) it is rare to see any major accumulation of snow. The roads should be clear for the most part. All transportation will be running. It is uncommon for this route to be closed due to weather. This trip can easily be done in the winter.
