| Antarctica | Shipboard WIFI Network Posted: Fri November 10, 2006 06:58 AM UTC
I am taking an Antarctica trip on the Nordkapp shortly. I know that the ship has internet access and I assume that it is fairly expensive.
I will be taking my WIFI equipped laptop so that I can work on my photos on board. Is there any chance that I will be able to get on the ship network without having to pay for the service. If I can do this, it would also probably pay for me to add a Vonage setup to the laptop so that I could make phone calls to my kids. DON |

There was no internet connection on the cruise we were on, but satellite telephone was about $10 a minute.
Having spent how many thousands on the Antarctic cruise, it's got to be worth a few more dollars if you want to stay in touch with the outside world that desperately?

Don't know about the wifi side of things - I was on the sister ship Nordnorge in January and the internet was $10 for 1 hour. You didn't need to take the whole hour in one go - you are assigned an id and password, and it counts down while you are logged on.
My mobile phone also worked while on board ship - texts cost me my standard international rate for my mobile phone - 25p (or around 50c). Shim

The trip was absolutely amazing - it's got to be the ultimate trip! The crossing of Drake's Passage was incerdibly rough! I fell and injured my knee on deck (tore the ligaments!) Some days in Antarctica it was too rough to land, but this only happened twice. Other days it was beautifully alm and sunny - stunning! The icebergs and the austere beauty of the mountains are unforgettable. Standing on deck watching an ice flow float past with a penguin sitting on it.......
The penguins were probably my highlight, but I LOVE penguins anyway. Seeing the whales breach right next to the zodiac, a leopard seal biting a chicnk out of the zodiac, seeing a iceberg calve into the ocean...... YOU'LL LOVE IT!!!!!!
