Is it currently safe for an american male to visit Peshawar and the khyber pass area(Afghanistan/Pakistan)?

Dont even think of it. You never know ! Just read about a kidnapping case in the papers few days back. An american tourist was kidnapped and few days later was found dead. His money, passport and everything stolen. Entire area is infested with terrorists. Stay away !!

I'm French, a woman, I'm married with a peshawari and I live in the old city when I come in Pakistan and I never face anything like this. I use to go to the bazar but the point is that I behave like a pakistani. I wear salwar kameez and I don't shout everywhere that I'm european. It's true that as French my situation is easier than an American :-))) but if you respect the people and the culture you won't have any problem.

sabarish: I recently read about a kidnapping case in Chicago as a result of which a British lady was murdered. Going by your logic that would mean that going to the US is dangerous for Brits.

Don't jump into conclusions based on single media reports.

Peshawar, Pushpapura in the old books, centre of Gandhara art and culture in past, always welcomed and hosted the guests from the entire world, without any discrimination to race, color, area, clan, nation.

City of hustle and bustle, tea shops, flower shops, great importance in terms of historical background.

Pathans're famous for their hospitality and warm welcoming nature as a result every year thousands of tourists and travelers come to Peshawar, Khyber pass and rest of north Pakistan.

Prior to your visit to Khyber pass, you're escorted by a guard because you'll be in a tribal area and the things, laws, customs, culture're different in this area.

On the other hand, I don't know from where did my friend "Sabarish" got that news of kidnapping a tourist and he said it's dangerous area? I can only laugh at his mentality and that's not his fault, he's not enough experienced traveler and very new to the forum as well so he'll have to learn the manners how to beahave on travel forums and how to provide information.


It's safe here and not only Peshawar all over Pakistan, travellers from India, China and Iran're going across the country.

Actually media's got some trouble with Pakistan so whatever happens they think it's because of Pakistan, but when we look at the facts, they're different.

On the other hand, Khyber pass's not in Afghnistan, it's the part of Khyber agency, located almost 2 hrs, 75 km from Peshawar city.

hi every body.....the question and the answer are more clear and the situation is workable.....
just to reinforce, yesterday me and my traveller friend from poland were together in lahore....and he enjoyed the tour of khyber pass and find every thing as normal...
so please do listen to the traveler go practically travelled in these area's and do not listen to the people who just sit in their homes and read the media and pass on the comments and draw conclusions....believe me we here received alot of back packers, hitchhikers, visitors and never listen such rediculus things......hope its clear....with love and respect from Tabrez

In 2004, I was there with Imran Schah (imranthetrekker) and later on we left for kalash valleys (Chitral) and north Pakistan.

Where ever I went the locals welcomed me, Lahore, Peshawar,Tribal areas,Chitral,Hunza, Gilgit.

It is a beautiful country with its colors, architecture, mountains, lush green pine forests and with the friends like Imran Schah, his family in Peshawar,in Chitral and Kalash valleys.

He is very popular either in Peshawar with Pathans, Chitral with Kalash and Nooristani families or in north Pakistan.

I miss the last evening in Peshawar when we were 4 people, me, an american couple and Imran at Khan Klub and I will never forget the tune of that Afghan musician on Rabab, Imran is he still there?


I think I will be back next year, this time for some climbing.

I travelled to the Khyber Pass in April and although I faced no threats or problems it is potentially dangerous and with the sudden rise in attacks in Wazirstan etc I would probably not go now ( meaning more attacks now than before). If you choose to go do your homework please.
