| Siena | TRANSPORTATION TO ABBEY OF SANT'ANTIMO Posted: Fri November 3, 2006 08:24 PM UTC
I am staying in Siena next week and I would like to find out if it is
possible to travel to the Abbey of Sant' Antimo without using a car. Is it possible to get a bus from Siena to the village of Montalcino and then walk (I have seen a reference to a sign-posted path from the monastery to Montalcino on the Abbey Web page) OR is a taxi the only option? Thanyou! Neil Robertson |

Hi, Neil. I'm looking at my map of Italy and it looks like about 15 kilometers from Montalcino to the Abbey. I tried to pull up a pedestrian map on Mappy and it said it won't calculate a pedestrian map more than 15 miles in length. Therefore, it must be slightly more than 15. If you have your address in Montalcino, you could use that with Mappy and see if you can get a map. It seems a bit long for a walk unless you are a walker. You might check bus connections. That area is pretty well covered by buses.
Here's the Mappy site. http://www.mappy.com/ Here's the bus site for Tuscany. http://www.lazzi.it/itanew/activenews.asp Good luck. We had a car and it seemed very near to Montalcino.

Neil
yeah, it is just about 10 km on the road. If there's a foot path, it may be a little shorter. I've been doing a lot of reading about this areas as we booked a place for next weekend. Have not seen info on any buses to San Antimo. However, another option is bike, you can rent bikes in Montalcino, nice downhill to the Church/Abbey. So I read about the bike rental co. in The "Rough Guide - Italy", which I left at the office.... If you are interested in more info on this, let me know and I'll dig it up on monday. We're bringing our bikes and hope for nice weather to explore a bit on 2 wheels. ciao Jon
