San Gimignano farmhouse with wonderful food
Posted: Tue October 31, 2006 09:26 PM UTC
Hello,

I plan to stay in a farmhouse in San Gimignano in mid Novermber. Can anyone recommend a farmhouse not far from the city, that has an active agricultural life? I want to see wine be made, watch olive vines grow, perhaps take cooking lessons...

Thanks,
Beth.

Olives grow on trees, not vines. The olive harvest in that area is usually around the end of October and perhaps there will still be some harvesting in November. As far as wine, the grapes should all be harvested before mid-November so you won't see harvest but perhaps you can see wine being made. It is a long process so you will see at least a part of it, even if it's looking at lovely oak barrels.

We stayed on two different farms near there and used http://www.holiday-rentals.com/ for our reservations. You can also type San Gimignano into a search engine like Google or Ask and visit the San Gimignano web site. They will list agriturismo or farm stay places. We also found one that way and it was really nice.

Good luck. Staying on a farm is a great way to see the area. It's so much nicer than staying in a city. We absolutely loved it.

Thank you both for your great suggestions (and for correcting me about the olive 'vines'.) If anyone else stayed at a place they particularly loved, I'd love to know the name.
