The City

I´m currently working 9-18, so I don´t have time to travel around, but it would be a shame not to explore the surrounding of Santiago city. Does anybody have tips of what to do during the evenings? All I´ve been hearing is how inappropiate it is for a young female to go out by herself, or tips about where to go shopping (like that´s all females do all the time?) or spa-places (I have that back home, thank you). Any other tips?

Belavista is a popular area for bars and restaurants, and safe enough. Also Los Leones.

mmm, you really have made me think how few things i know i can do in te cityu, i can't think other than having a drink in bellavista. maybe watching handcrafts in Bellavista also, or Santa Lucia. i'm thinking on what i'd do, going to some karaoke maybe or playing bowling. It depends on what you like to do

If you finish at 6 you won't be able to do much sightseeing. Most museums etc. will be closed. But you could take a dinner tour:
http://www.turistour.com/excursiones.php (on the last page). Another place you might enjoy having an evening meal is the Boulevard Arauco. This is part of the Parque Arauco Mall and, before you scoff, some very good restaurants have a branch there now. You can wander around quite safely, choosing where you want to eat. You could eat in one place and have ice-cream in another. Also the Patio Bellavista between Constitución and Pio Nono in Bellavista has a variety of places to eat, resto-bars as they call them, and some nice stalls and shops selling artesania.
For 380 pesos you could get a bus going up Av. Las Condes and wait for the sun to set over the mountains. Then return the same way.

Ok, here are some tips what you can do in Santiago:

Shopping:
Parquearauco.cl is probably the biggest and also nicest shopping mall in the city. You can get there with the metro red line until Escuela Militar and from there you can catch a colectivo or take a taxi - pretty close to that place.

Entertainment:
Providencia is a nice area for going out at night; many cafes, bars and restaurants and it is very safe. Bellavista is nice but alone?? I wouldn't do that.

Sights:
Placa de Armas, Museum Bellas Artes, Cerro Sant Cristobal (is a must at a sunny day), Los Domenigos, Parque Intercomunal in Las Condes, Cerro Santa Lucia, Bellavista, Parque Forestal (nice to relax); outside the city: Valparaiso, Viña del Mar - by bus. And Cayon de Maipo (thermal water) and Yerba Loca Sanctuary for walking and hiking.

Merced, the reddish building almost at the corner of Plaza de Armas).
They have short (free or dirt cheap) tours of certain parts of downtown, in both English and Spanish. They offer different tours, run on different days, so definitely check them out.

Clubs... not my forte, but a few suggestions:
Subterraneo, on Orrego Luco (Providencia, metro P. de Valdivia)
Plaza Murano - Personally, I find it too "meat-market" for my taste
Aura - Chic and VIP, they're very selective regarding people they let in
There's one just off Plaza Nunoa, can't remember the name, supposed to be good but I've never been.
