| Minsk | Cost of a "Western" style apartment in "central" Minsk Posted: Mon October 30, 2006 11:16 AM UTC
Just curious how much a western-style 2 bedroom apartment in the center of Minsk with reliable high-speed internet access would cost per month?
Additionally, is Minsk an interesting/fun city to stay in for a few months? I am from the US and don't know anyone there but thought it could be an interesting experience. |

Hi! A furnished 2-bedroom appartment in the centre of Minsk would cost around 500 US dollars per month. (A hotel single room is around 100-150 US dollars per night)
As for Minsk itself, it's a modern city, very clean and safe. Fine samples of so-called "Stalin style" (new classic style) of the 1950s, constructivism style of the 1930s, 17-19th centuries churches and houses, etc. Nightclubs, casinos, bars, Fine Arts museum, WWII (The Great Patriotic War) museum, Jewish memorial, Nature museum, National Library in the shape of a diamond, Lee Harvey Oswald's appartment, skating ringks in the central squares, lots of other things (nice or odd or funny or tragic). Most important: very friendly and welcoming people, though not many speaking English. Beyond the city: Dudutki village (pottery, blacksmith, horses, moonshine, bakery, local cheese, old cars, windmill... Vitebsk -- birthplace of world famous artist Marc Chagall... Mir and Nesvizh castles of the 16th cent.- the Radzivil family residence (UESCO World Heritage List). Brest region -- the end of the WWI, beginning of the GPW, dessolution of the USSR, residence of Belarusian Santa. Other historic sites, monasteries, National Parks with rich wild life, ski resorts, and much more. You can definitely find something for your taste! If you need any help in going around, I'd be glad to assist.

I went to Minsk 2 weeks ago.. had the same idea like you.. "hey let's go to a intressting and diffrent place". Now Iam glad I went but to be honest with you.. the hole place is REALLY boring as there is nothing to do there. Also people are very shy and not very intressting to make an effort to make you feel welcome.. they are friendly but just really boring and I got a feeling they do not really like forgin people in Belarus. I was there for 6 days in Minsk and I have been traveling all over the world and always feel that a place with no intresst will be great as I love people.. but belarusian people are very strange. I had a very few chances to talk to people and when I did they where very shy and not very intressted as soon as they knew I was a forginer. If you go.. I would try to hook up with someone that you know in Belarus. Otherwise you will get very bored..

Hi! An apartment may run between $300 and $600, depending on the furnishing, etc. Minsk is definitely a cool place to stay. I just got back from a month-long visit and it was not enough!!! Clubs, restaurants, museums... I loved it! I have friends, by the way, who could help you to find an apartment. Hope it helps!
