We stayed at the Old Faithful Inn last July. I wouldn't say that crowds were a problem at all. I think that we saw Old Faithful erupt 6 times in 3 days. Not by a plan just by coincident. The viewing area is quite large.
I would say go when it suits your schedule. While there, you need to walk the boardwalk through the Upper Geyser Basin. That was very cool too.

No reason you shouldn't love Yellowstone.
