Uluru National Park (Ayers Rock) Hiking

Hey,

I'd love to spend a week or so hiking round Ayers Rock & Alice Springs but was looking for a way to do it on a budget - does anyone know of any walking/ hiking groups that arrange trips/ hikes there rather than the orgaised tours?

Cheers!

HI! Anna:

Well, you can actually do the hikes yourself while at Uluru and Kata Tjuta. Do see my VT Uluru for my experience and see if you find them useful. "Uluru Express" would be a good tour company to consider since they drop you at the sight and pick you up at the end of your hike.

Getting around the area, if you do not drive, may be tricky and you'll have to rely on the Greyhound buses to get you from Uluru (Yulara) to Alice Springs. Did not do any hikes in The Alice so I can't help you on that one.

Which time of the year you are going ??
Be aware of real high temperatures during summer. We had last January between 45 and 50 degrees C !!!

Don't know if you are also planning to visit King's Canyon ?? There are also some great hikes.

Anna, if you're a member of a bushwalking club you would have no trouble with getting in on walks with the locals, usually on a 'share expenses' basis and not fees. Check the site for the Alice Springs Bushwalkers Association : http://home.austarnet.com.au/longwalk/

I know Darwin Bushwalkers welcome members of other clubs(I'm a Darwin member) but not "tourists". Not sure of the situation with Alice Springs. It's cheap to join any one of them and you'd find reciprocal arrangements all over Australia.

And by the way, the Larapinta Trail is a good one near Alice Springs.
