Xmas in Melbourne Posted: Mon October 23, 2006 11:27 AM UTC
Hi, i'm going to be arriving in Melbourne on 22nd Dec till 30th Dec to see the test match, after staying with friends in Perth. As i'm travelling alone anyone from the UK or Aussies male or female want to meet up esp Xmas Day?
I'm staying at the Grand Hyatt, can anyone thats stayed there recently tell me whats it like?
Look forward to hearing from anyone.

The Grand Hyatt is a very nice Hotel.. I havent stayed there as I live in Melbourne.. but I know that it is a fairly good Hotel and is in the middle of the city so you can get to wherever you need to either by tram or train...
I usually spend xmas with family but im sure that there will be someone out there that you can meet up with,,.. esp if you are going to be in the city! Alot of the restuarants put on xmas dinners so you could go to one of these places I guess..
good luck & if no one replies to you... email me closer to the date & I will see if there is anything more that I can help you with...
so where are you from originally?

Hi Amy, thanks for your reply.
I'm from the east end of London now live in the comfort of the essex countryside, but still have to travel into the city to work. I'm looking out of my window at St Pauls.
The hotel Grand Hyatt looks cool from the pics on the internet and as its the Hyatt take it must be good.
So any good bars and clubs you can recommend?

Thanks for your replies Amy, i'm into House, RnB, Soul Funk most really, but not heavy.
Get me on Guest Lists? Take it you work for media/promotions? That be very cool.
I'm 46, but a young 46!!!!
If you can get me on the guest list where the cricketers are having there beers be fantastic!!!
So tell me about you?
I have been to a few places in America, have a look on Hotel.com good discounts for top hotels....stayed at the Waldorf in New York for half the rack rate 4 yrs ago via that site. Cant get better than that hotel.
Whats the best beaches in Melbourne to chill out before the cricket starts? Heard St Kildas is nice any others thats say within an hour of the city via train?

St Kilda and it's beaches are 20 minutes by tram from city - total beach culture there.
Williamstown on the other side of the bay is 30 minutes by train and a good place to hang out with its marina etc but oldercrowd/families than trendy St Kilda.
Brighton is famed for its colourful beach huts - 30 minutes on train down the eastern side of the city.
There's lots of little bays along the coast but they are bay beaches rather than the dramatic ocean beaches.
Great area to hang out at night (and daytime too) in addition to St Kilda and the alleys of the city (the joy of Melbourne are the hidden gems in the alleyways) is Brunswick/Gertrude/Smith Streets in Fitzroy/Carlton - bohemian cafes, bars, clubs, slightly grungy, very trendy in a friendly non-posing way (as you work near St Pauls, bit like Shoreditch/Hoxton before it became over-gentrified :))

hey.. sorry about the late reply.. havent been online for a while... been away from work etc...
I might be able to get you on some guestlists for house clubs... but i dont think that i know of any that the cricketers will be at...
Yeah, I think that St Kilda is the place to be, as this has beaches, cafes, nightlife and there are always heaps of o/s travellers around so its recommended...
Yeah there are a heap of other beaches to swim at... I wouldnt recommend swiiming in st kilda beach cause its full on.. I would take a tram or bus to Brighton or Elwood... really nice beaches to swin...
well ill catch ya later

Hi,
If you hang around the Crown Casino restaurants, I am sure you will spot a cricketer or two. I know as I have seen them there. Might be a bit of a pricey exercise though.
