Versailles Luggage storage in Versaille
Posted: Mon October 23, 2006 12:48 AM UTC
Hi,

We will be catching the train to Versailles from Paris in the morning of 15th November. After we visit Versailles, we will be picking up a rental car from EuropeCar in the afternoon and drive to Bayeux.

There's a big problem =>where to store our luggage. I have tried to ask EuropeCar where to put our luggage but they just say that they are not responsible for our luggage. Does anyone know where I can leave our luggage while we visit Versailles?

Thanks in advance for any advise.

Rent the car before you go to Versaille and put it in the trunk

Don't know where you are staying but we've left our luggage at the hotel a couple times. Ask VERY politely at the desk. They usually have a secure place to store things for a few hours. Their main concern is getting the room cleaned for the next occupant so you have to check out and remove the luggage, but beyond that, they are usually quite accomodating. At least ask them. The worst that can happen is they'll say no and you'll be back at square 1.

Other than that, the idea above to rent the car earlier would solve the problem.

Good luck.

The problem is we have already booked the car and the pick up time is 4pm. Maybe I should try and see if we can change it... Thanks for the tip.

See what the rate is to pick up in PAris also. Then you can drive to Versaille and save the train fare also.

There are three train stations in Versailles and each one serves a different area. Ya gotta know where yer goin'!! It took me quite a while to figure this out, but here's the little I know about the trains:
Gare Rive Droite

The SNCF serves the Gare Rive Droite. Trains into Paris are frequent (about every 20 minutes) at all three train stations. The end of the line from here is the Gare St. Lazare in Paris. If you have a carte orange, do not composter from the Gare Rive Droite.

If you have a carte orange (zones 3-4), it is valid on this line as far as La Défense. From here, you must then buy another ticket to pick up Line A of the RER. You can also pick up the metro at La Defense.

Gare Rive Gauche

The RER Line C (the "yellow" line) serves the Gare Rive Gauche. This is the line we used most often on our Wednesday visits. Line C of the RER runs along the left bank of the Seine in Paris and has stops at many of the places you will be visiting (Pont de l'Alma for the Bateaux Mouches, Invalides, Pont St. Michel, Musée d'Orsay, etc.). To view a map of the RER lines, click here.

If you have a carte orange for zones 3 and 4, you can use it on the RER line C as far as the Champs de Mars/Tour Eiffel station. From there you need a metro ticket. Or, if you don't have a carte orange at all, you can buy a combiné ticket (combination train + metro) at the train station. The combiné will then cover both your train and metro travel into Paris.

Gare des Chantiers

The third train station that serves Versailles is the Gare des Chantiers. The SNCF runs into Paris to Montparnasse. The only time I ever used this train station was to go to Chartres. If you travel by train to Mont. St. Michel, you will leave from here.

We have been to Versailles now and the tourist office was most helpful. They told us that just outside the palace, you can store your luggage there for FREE :-) Just go to the tourist office first. You can get all the information there, maps, tips etc. We were there during winter so they had some winter specials that weren't advertised in their tourist website. It is an easy short walk from the train station. People are so friendly there :-) I love the French people!!!
