For excellent but pricy restaurants, try the following: - Chez Sarran, probably the best restaurant in Toulouse. - La Reserve (speciality of small and big game), more affordable for the menu at lunch time. - Le Pastel. More affordable: - Le 19. - La Cantine du Curé. For excellent meat: - La Braisière. - Le Mange Vin (small restaurant in an ancient street). For "Cassoulet" (even if August is a bit hot for this kind of speciality): - Le Bon Vivre. Don't hesitate to contact me if you want more precise info. Good trip in Toulouse!

Thanks - I'll look at as many of these as I can. I disagree about cassoulet in August - it's never too hot for cassoulet!

I agree : a toulousain will never eat "cassoulet" (stew) with a similar heat (it makes at the moment between 30 and 40 °C here). It is of course preferable to eat the grilled "magret", of the "foie gras", or of the "moungetade," less heavy than the "cassoulet" (it is like a "cassoulet", with beans, but only of the sausage, and little duck grease). I think that "Saran" is closed at time...

I realise that locals won't eat cassoulet when the weather is like this - unfortunately some of us only manage visit the South-West every few years, so we need to take advantage while we can :) However, I'm always happy to try other things and I intend to do that. I'm looking forward to the trip - it's a long time since I've been down there.

I understand for the Cassoulet... You will need a "sieste" thereafter, but anyway. Too bad for Saran, but other restaurants, including those mentioned by our wonderful Toulousain guide, are fine. By the way, pages of our Toulousain guide are wonderful and give a very good insight of this tremendous city.

Hi I just got back from the trip this evening. One Toulouse restaurant I visited was the Taverne de Maitre Kanter on Allee Jean Jaures. I actually went there planning to have choucroute or fruits de mer, but ended up having the cassoulet. Pretty good.
My best food experiences were at small hotels in the Pyrenees (Ariege), during week there. These are: Auberge des Deux Rivieres (Pont de la Taule) Auberge des Myrtilles (Salau) Auberge des Ormeaux (Trein d'Ustou) Hotel les Oussailles (Aulus les Bains)
The first two are run by dutch people and they can really cook. Details are at www.ariege.com and I'll write something about them myself when I have time to set up my travel pages here.

Would make more sense to post the vegetarian question as a separate thread. This one is pretty old now and likely only seen by a small number of people.
