I've read some interesting opinions regarding the usefelness of TEFL courses, but I've decided to do one because I think it would help my confidence. I'm going to do the course in Melbourne next month & am wondering whether I'm going to get many opportunities to use it there.
Does anybody know whether it would be difficult initially to get work in teaching English to foreign students? I'd like to offer part-time tuition, would it be easier to get my foot in the door by initially offering voluntary tuition to gain experience?
I don't have any idea if it is easy to get work in this area. If it were me I would offer to do some voluntary work as that would give you experience and also may get your foot in the door.
I would also google for schools that offer this service to foreign students and maybe email them or ring them for some advice.
There are many of these schools and private businesses that offer this to foreign students.
Here in Cairns there are hundreds of students from all over the world taking English lessons. Some are short term others offer long term English education.
Cheers
Anne
That's funny, I also had some of the same questions in mind, and decided that anyway I'll do the course in Melbourne next month too... are you doing the i to i one?
For experience, I've been tutoring as a Volunteer up in Ballarat the past couple of years through an organisation afiliated with AMES. It's amazing how many immigrants (and long term students in Oz) are eligible for free English tuition... I've decided to target shorter term students because of this.
