hi kool kats, new on this site, but finding it very useful. Ok, I'm heading down from Canada to Rio in several month. Will be staying around Ipanema Beach. Plan is to soak up some sun, hit he beach, rent a scooter and cruise the city, and ofcourse hit the night life. Look for Samba, Bossa Nova, and some Brazillian House. Anyone know any good spots? Would love to hear from anyone who's planning to go around the same time, maybe hook up : ) chow

Oi Dimitri,
I seriously suggest that you scroll down, and read a little more about Rio, especially the warnings. You will also find many, many recommendations for hotels, restaurants, and night spots from other travelers. Renting a scooter is not the best idea, (and probably not available)due to several factors like high insurance, ease of assults, heavy traffic, muggings, etc. Rio is a great place to party, a great place to live! But, it can be very dangereous at times. (Of course, Life is a gamble....but, it is not cheating if you stack the odds in YOUR favor.) Good luck, and enjoy Rio! JAC

wow, seems like everyone is telling me nothing but horror stories about Rio, I mean, how dangerous can a city be??? Parnoid now! :8

Someone finally got your attention, eh? Look at it this way.....would you drive across Canada in the winter without first checking out your car....packing extra warm clothing and "survival gear"....or checking out the weather forcast?
Rio is a great place, full of wonderful people, and well worth any trip there. BUT, like in so many other large cities in the world, there are some people there who exploit others, especially weaker ones. If you go, do not make yourself a "target of opportunity"! Don't go to the beach with money and valuables....don't flash around a lot of money trying to impress people....drink to a point, then stop! We don't have to be stupid to have fun! Brasil is a fantastic place to visit, and more than worth the effort in going there. If going alone sounds too risky, try local tours or find others to travel with. Remember, some people swim with sharks and live to tell about it! Good luck! JAC
