| Fortaleza | teaching english in Fortaleza? Posted: Fri October 13, 2006 04:18 PM UTC
Hello everyone,
I am considering relocating to Fortaleza and was wondering if it is possible to get work there teaching english. I realize it probably won't pay that much. Does anyone have any experience in this area? Thanks in advance for any advice. |

My son taught there between school and university, but as a volunteer. Try googling "sociedade brasileira da cultura inglesa", or just the last two words. Good luck!

Hello!
There are many English schools in Fortaleza, but not so many excellent teachers. I assume you are a native speaker, so you have an advantage. You must speak Portuguese, though. Especially if you want to teach beginners. If you want to teach at an advanced level, try Berlitz and Casa de Cultura Britânica (CCB), which is an English school at UFC (Universidade Federal do Ceará). I've studied there last semester and they have very good teachers and students, and they are interested in native speakers, even if it's just for a few classes. But to teach there I think you must be pretty good at English grammar. =) Good luck and let us know if you find something. =) Feel free to ask any questions! See ya!

Thanks for your help Guedes. I'll check out these leads. I know Berlitz is an international school and have heard good things about them.
Yes I'm a native speaker, and recent university grad, and certified CELTA esl teacher. So hopefully it shouldn't be too difficult to find work. Thanks again.

It seems that you have good chances, then! Actually, I think you have everything to get a job at a good school! But like I said, you need to speak Portuguese. hehehe. Do you? =)

I have been practicing with Pimsleur Brazilian Portuguese for about three months now, and I feel like I could almost survive living in Brazil at this stage. I think the foundation I have with Pimsleur will help me learn quickly once I am there and working it out with people day to day. And I am practicing about two hours per day now.
So by the time I plan to arrive there, some time in December, my Portuguese should be functional. Cheers, Craig

Good! I hope it will be good enough! You could try to start with advanced classes, in which you'll have to speak more English than Portuguese... =)
Good luck! =)

Hi Canaleiro,
Actually I am using Pimsleur, and I was concerned about that. I had heard that the Portuguese in Fortaleza was different. But what am I to do?? I just have to continue on with my CD's and when I get there I'll find a good teacher. I hope my studies now aren't going to make it more difficult once I get there though. Thanks for the head's up. Canaleiro, is there anything more you can tell me about the difference in the Portuguese spoken in Rio and that of Fortaleza?

The difference is mostly in accent, plus a little bit of vocabulary. But don't worry, you'll soon get used to it, and it's not THAT different, anyway - not as great as the difference between Brazilian and metropolitan Portuguese.

Robine is right. I think it's possible to understand any accent in Brazil if you speak Brazilian Portuguese. It might not be very easy in the beginning, but the differences aren't that big.
