I stayed at the Chornoye More hotel (Black Sea hotel) Not the cheapest but very reasonable very comfortable and very central.
I was alone in Odessa and it was very safe, but like any city you have to be careful

Hey there,
We've been to Odessa a few weeks ago. And had this really nice girl take care of all the stuff for us. If you are interested - let me know, I'll send you her details. Just e-mail me at texasbaby28@yahoo.com

Yes, I would echo the comments of the first member. We were there in July and had no problems but take the kind of care you'd take anywhere. We didn't book accommodation - we just picked up an old dear at the station with the help of a student we met on the trolley bus. Don't hand over any money till you've seen the place if its a private apartment and ask to to see the room first if its a hotel - make sure that the things you might want to use actually work and check the hours that hot water is available.

There's pros and cons to an apartment and hotel. But I'd suggest an apartment. I got a very nice apartment with kitchen, air conditioner(and heat), independent hot water, cable tv, phone w/ internet access for $70/night. Last November, I got an apartment on Deribaskaya St w/ balcony and all the other amenities for $60/night. You could get an apartment for less that does not have so much for less money. I stayed at the Chernoye Moye a few years ago for $100 and got a room that was small.
It depends what you're comfortable with. I suggest looking at the links in this forum. Maybe you will be lucky and a guy called Pikine will reply to you. Odessa is safer than most places in the world. You look like a big enough guy that maybe even the taxi drivers won't hassle you. :) Have fun!

Yes, it's safe to go there alone. By the way, do not stay in a hotel. Hotels in Odessa are very expensive. If you're a looking for an average priced apartment located in the down town, I can suggest this: www.amadey.biz. Good luck!

I have used these people a couple of times http://www.odessaapts.com/ and had really good service. Odessa is a very good place to visit on your own plenty to do and see. I have never felt threatened there. Some locals do say there is crime and it is not 100% safe for foreigners but then again where is safe?

definately agree that you can pick up a great apartment, very central and very economical. The best holiday I have add for ages - no trouble or crime witnessed and incredibly friendly people (and beautiful!!) Be careful with the vodka is very drinkable and a whole bottle can disappear very quickly!

apartment options are the best unless you have money to burn in which case Hotels are okay too. Like Odessa Hotel is nice, but you'll be spending $200 per night for a Mariott Inn type of room and deal with a long walk up the Potemkin stairs every day. Take a look at www.odessaapts.com they have very nice flats and I never had a problem using them before.
