My family several generations back are from Passau and I would like to visit either next year or possibly the year after / possibly in November or December and would welcome any thoughts or opinions of the city, places to consider, etc. Alos, I only speak english - will that be a problem? Thanks!

You'll manage fine with English in Passau, though you should learn the very basic German phrases to show respect. (and it's Gruss Gott, not Guten Tag here as the general greating in Bavaria).

Passau is a truly fabulous city, clean, scenic, maneagable, & no negatives I can think of. You'll enjoy, include a Dannau (danube) river cruise of course. Check out the VT pages starting with Michaels- great page on Passau, as with all your pages!

Thanks! I did not find a michaels page, but did find several other interesting PASSAU pages while looking. I should have thought to look before posting, but didn't think there would be much available on PASSAU - I was wrong. I did take a semester of German in college, but don't remember much beyond guten morgan (sp?), guten tag (which I guess isn't appropriate), ich bin ein Berliner (of which I am not) and a few others that I would hesitate to even try an spell here. I do have time to brush up on some others though.

sorry- the name of the first poster "globetrott" is michaela. He provided the link to his passau page in the thread, so just copy and paste it to visit. Like all his pages- top quality photos/info.

Well, you've already got a few more words of German than many travelers! ANother helpful word is tcheuss (substitute U-umlaut for the "eu").

It's a more informal goodbye than auf-widersehen. Like ciao

No problem being an English speaker only. Passau is a great city to stroll around in and don't forget to visit the marvellous cathedral.

November is the worst possible time to go to Passau, as all the tourist attractions close down. It is wet and cold and the fog rises from the rivers.
December at least brings the Christmas market, some drier weather and tad of snow.

I highly recommend visiting in late April or October, as during this time the main tourist attractions/activities can still be "done".

You won't have any problems finding people who speak English, Passau is a vibrant student town with a large community of foreign students. They used to have an English movie night once a week when I was a student there. It also is a sign of good education among Germans to speak English, so many make an effort.

BTW, don't plan on spending the night at the HI-hostel Veste Oberhaus during late September and early October, as it will be packed with first year students seeking accomodation.

It sounds like I may re-think winter travel to Passau, unless it is coupled with other cities. Well... still have plenty of time. tcheuss. (credit goes to rubbersoul75 for the german here)

just a tiny little correction :
tscheuss is the wrong spelling, and it would sound like the engl. word "choice"
byebye is spelled Tschuess, it also sounds different, (that sound for the german U with 2 dots on top is most probably totally unknown of in english), but for the word Tschuess the english word "Juice" comes quite close to it.
I just could not take over the responsibility that someone would say tscheuss instead of tschuess
;-)

I'd say the closest english word in pronuciation is "choose", pretty much the same sound.

which tschuess do you choose to use ;)

Thanks for the clarification. Without spellcheck, typographical errors are my downfall... see my original post. Thanks to all. Tschuess, Tommy
