Bari Living in Bari, Italy

I am thinking about moving to Italy to teach English as a second language, and am considering Bari. I have visited Italy several times, but have not been to the south. If anyone has been there or lives there, your insight is greatly appreciated.

Hi We were thinking of catching the ferry from Bari to Dubrovnik from Bari and spending a few days there before the ferry ride. Our travel agent said don't bother and we flew from Rome. Appears it is not interesting like most other parts of Italy.
Good Luck

Bari RE: RE: Living in Bari, Italy

Bari is tha capital fo Pulia, or Apulia- the region is fascinating, great beaches and some both rugged and green inland stretches. Bari itself has a nice medieval towncenter, but the city as a whole is industrial, and not attractive. It is southern eastern Italys largest port and therefor has a lot of big freight vessel operations. Not an attractive scene on the waterfront.
Though the remains of St. Nicholas (yes St. Nick) are found in Baris cathedral. We enjoyed a day just in the city center.

So, the city is not the nicest Italian city to be in, and as it is in the south, means the petty crime rates are higher.

The area (pulia) however has a lot to offer, including great seafood, something like 80% of europes pasta comes from here, and Italys best olive oil comes from the areas olives- so they say, and I agree. I actually read an article this weekend that the region is the next "Tuscany"- yeah right, but a lot of Brits and Americans are buying up property here. Anyway, the people I've met from Pulia (co-workers and a neighbor here in Italy) are great/sincere. I would strongly suggest a visit if you can swing it before you decide.

buona fortuna

First of all,it isn't true that "most other parts of Italy are not interesting",it's just the opposite,however...
About Bari I'm a little bit partisan because I live here, but I can tell you something.Bari has a concentrated beautiful center with the beautiful Old Town(Bari has very old origins) and the modern town, real center of the city with many shops.
The traffic is very very caotic, impossible to find a parking during the day in the town-center,but I think that the city isn't so industrial and dull as some people say...yes,there is a big port, but I don't see the problem.
It's true that some pheripherical areas are crime-areas,but,I wouldn't exagerate, not the whole city is so dangerous...it depends. In the Old Town it's possible to find the pickpockets.
During the night, there's always something to do,expecially in the Old Town:in fact there are a lot of pizzerias,bars,restaurants...and a lot of people!
It's a university town and also a religious town, thanks to Saint Nicholas, venerated by various religions.

Personally,I'm satisfied to live here

I could list 100 reasons to live in bari. but it's only my opinion. I think that the better way is to have a little journey in bari ad others areas near bari and then decide. all depends as you feel it. Bye.

Hi rayofla,

I know it's been a while since you posted this, and I've seen that you lived for 8 months in Perugia, but did you ever move to Bari?

And if so, how did you find it?

Thanks,

Nero

No, I never did move to Bari! I lived in Parma and Perugia and now I have a job opportunity in Rovereto so I might be moving there... I do plan on visiting Bari since I have not been to the south yet.
