Ciudad Acuņa Latest travel info for Acuna?
Posted: Wed October 4, 2006 11:40 PM UTC
My wife and I are heading to the Davis Mountains this month and I was planning to stop in Acuna on the way. I intended to stay in Acuna for the convenience - probably the San Antonio - but my wife is worried due to gang activity on the border. I looked all over the internet and found one newspaper article about a murder/shootout back in May or June that was drug related but it wasn't anywhere near the tourist areas. If that is the worst crime they have Acuna is a lot safer than San Antonio, TX. I also found some recent postings that the locals were a little irritated with the recent immigration laws and werent quite as friendly as usual. I figure if we don't act obnoxious everything will be fine and we will have a great time. Anyone been down there recently and if so what are things like?
Thanks!!

Howdy,

I was in Acuna last weekend, and everything was fine. Acuna hasn't had the problems that a lot of other border towns have had. Even though there are some tensions between the U.S. and Mexico do to the immigration issue, and the proposed border fence, the people of Acuna, and Mexicans in general, don't seem to hold it against regular folks. I was out and about at night in places most Americans won't step foot in, and I had no problems.

If you plan on staying in Acuna for the night, I recommend the Hotel San Antonio. It's right on Calle Hidalgo, which is the main drag when you cross the bridge. It down about a half mile or so from the bridge on the right. They have secure parking with a security guard 24 hours a day. Just head straight there when you cross the bridge and pull into the parking lot. Slip the guard a $5.00 and he'll be very appreciative.

I am very familiar with Ciudad Acuna, so let me know if you have any other questions.

Marc

Thanks Mark, that is pretty much what I hoped. A friend had recommended the San Antonio hotel so it was good to hear you say the same thing. We are pretty much going to check out a couple of shops, maybe some leatherwork, and enjoy the food and drinks so not looking for anything special. If you know of any place that is particularly good I wouldn't mind knowing about it. I am definitely not planning on hitting Hunters or any of the other bars in BoysTown. Thanks again!

Joe,

There are plenty of places to drink, but not to many places to eat. I like to have a few beers at Pancho's, because they have tables outside on the side walk and the waiters are excellent. Corona club is a great atmosphere, but drink prices are little high. Crosby's has a nice bar and restaraunt, so that's where I would recommend for lunch or dinner.

Have fun
