Excuse my asking a language question in this travel forum. What does "ShwmaiByt" mean? I think it's Welsh, I've seen it on a t-shirt together with the Welsh dragon... I'd appreciate any help on this one. Thanks in advance!

Can't find a translation (may be a band, or a TV prog, or slang or some such), but here's a website which makes a t-shirt with it on:

And yes, it's Welsh.

According to Webster's online Welsh-English dictionary, "Shw' mae" means "how are you; how is it going?"

Sorry, I don't know (yet) what "Byt" means...note that the phrase is almost certainly intended to be "Shwmai Byt" (two words)...

The logo on the t-shirt seems to be from Budweiser and, on the back of the t-shirt (illustrated on the website leics googled) it also says "Nice and Cold". So I would expect it is some pun vaguely using Budweiser imagery. "Byt" would be a rough transliteration of 'Bud'('t' often softens to 'd' in Welsh). It would also sound like the Wales slang for 'mate' (as in Hello Buttie or Hello But). Like mcalpin says, Shwmae means 'hello' or 'hows things'.

Can't say I've seen a Shwmaibyt t-shirt being worn by any of the young things in cardiff. Clearly I am frequenting the wrong cool Welsh bars ;-)

Thanks a lot, everyone! The t-shirt actually looks like the sixth one from the top on this website:

But I gather that it's OK to assume it means "Hello / How are you, buddy?"... right?
Thanks again,
Gosia

Shw Mae means- How are you and Byt is a welsh translation of the valleys word for friend which is BUT. So it basically means "HOW ARE YOU FRIEND?"
