Uluru National Park (Ayers Rock) Campervan touring Red centre
Posted: Mon October 2, 2006 08:22 AM UTC
Hi
We are in our late 40's and have hired a camper van for 7 days bet 5th & 13th March 2007 starting at Alice Springs.

Can anyone advise of a good route, to include Uluru, that we can take to get the best out of our time.

Any good ideas, things to do and tips would be really welcome.

Thanks in advance
Johnsinho

Hi. you dont mention if your doing a round trip back to alice springs with the camper or dropping it off at uluru. You could take a drive through the East McDonald ranges to the east of alice springs for the day and end back up at the alice for the night and i found a trip out to glen helen resort in the west mcdonald ranges just to the west of alice springs to be worthwhile. Stay at glen helen overnight then head to kings canyon for a night then to uluru for a coulpe of nights. Insurance restrictions will stop you from travelling on any dirt roads unless you hire a 4x4 campervan so this will mean doubling back along sealed roads. And for March you'll want a powered site to run your air cond because its going to be HOT.Have a great trip.

Alice Springs to Kings Canyon, then onward to the Rock ( Uluru)
Kings Canyon has a great Caravan/campervan park. There you can do the walk of the canyon early morning....day light type early as it gets hot later in the day...there are a couple of walks you can do here so I would suggest 2 days.
Uluru also has a good camping site....
The trip from Alice along the MacDonnell ranges is amazing and you can stop along the way at the gorges etc, here there are some places that you can stay in your van....bush camping, toilets and showers....
Ask at the Alice tourist centre and they will be able to tell you which gorges have these....
As Scott said, you will have to stick to sealed roads, this isn't a problem, all these places can be done on sealed roads...
Have a great time in this wonderful area of Aus

Dave, while in Alice I would recommend you visit the Flying Doctors museum and tour, this is really great and especially as you will get a good idea of the sparse \/large area up that way.
Again for same reasons I would also suggest you do the school of air tour, this is also really interesting.
Another one we enjoyed was the old telegraph tour....all good value for money.

Cheers
Anne
PS I might get back to UK when the pound is better value for us:)
