Grand Bahama Island Grand Bahama Island -- Any hope for a memorable experience?
Posted: Fri July 11, 2003 09:12 PM UTC
Hey y'all! I'm heading to GBI for Labor Day weekend -- I found a ridiculously good airfare/deal at the Our Lucaya resort that was way too good to pass up, especially from Chicago. Unfortunately, I've heard that GBI is really just an extension of Florida. If this true? Is there anything to do there that would make for a truly memorable Bahamian experience?

Cheers!

Hi Drew
I just joined this list in order to responde to your Bahamas question. You can make Saturday night memorable by attending the Grand Funk Railroad concert being held at the Royal Oasis Resort in Freeport. You mentioned playing guitar, so maybe you know who Bruce Kulick is? He toured with KISS for 12 years after the makeup and is now tearing this up with GFR. It's a high energy show featuring 3-4 new songs and I guarantee a great time. I hope you can make it.

Our Lucaya is a fabulous resort. That would make it memorable in itself. I'm with Tropicdiver: go scuba diving! If you're not certified, you can take a resort course while you're there and swim with sharks, eagle rays, sea turtles and thousands of other lovely critters in turqois water. I found the land-based attractions on GBI to be well, not very memorable.

Howdy Neighbor! We're from Beloit, WI and will also be visiting GBI over Labor Day weekend (Th.-Tu.) but we'll be over at Viva Fortuna.

Just thought I'd say HI.

I look forward to taking my hubby to see the band.

Hi Drew!
Did you make it to the show? I was right up front taking photos. Feel free to check them out at http://www.angelfire.com/rock3/gfr_pix1/Photos_Freeport.htm . We also saw them in your home town July '02 with B.O.C. Were you there? Hope you had as good a time as we did in BAH!!

Truth be told, I was disappointed. The Our Lucaya resort did not live up to expectations, the staff was rude, and the food across the island was uninspired and overpriced. I cannot in good faith recommend GBI to anyone, except to say that the East End Adventures-led ecotour is a brilliant way to get away from the tourists and see the actual island. If it weren't for that, we would have been truly miserable.

Which tour did you take? I see they offer a 3 1/2 hour tour and an all day tour.

We are scheduled to go to GBI in February and also want to make the most of our 2 days there.
