| Kanchanaburi | Tour information Posted: Fri September 29, 2006 08:12 AM UTC
I have started planning a trip to Thailand for June next year with my family and I have come across a 3 day, 2 night tour to Kanchanaburi and up the river Kwai out of Bangkok. It takes in a bost ride, elephant ride, train ride and looking at the war museum etc.
Has anyone done this tour and what did you think of it. Or am I beter off to just go to Kanchanaburi and do sight seeing from there. Thanks Iancccc |

We took a day tour out of Bangkok, arranged by one of the little travel agencies that are everywhere. They can usually book you for the next day, so you don't have to lock yourself in until you get there. They usually pick you up and drop you off right at your hotel, or you may have to clarify that during the price negotiation.
It was a long day, from maybe 06:30 until about 20:00. There were a dozen of us in a van which took us out to the river, a nice small number. Then we got into a boat to take us to the bridge. We had a snack there and then the van showed up and took us to a train station (a small pleasant outdoor affair). We got on the train and took a ride along the Death Railway, which was also pleasant as we could stick our heads out the open windows and jump off when it stopped for a few minutes. There were pleasant views overlooking the river and the hills beyond, which the guide told us were in Burma. (You can see scenes shot here in the movie "Platoon".) Then the van took us to the JEATH war museum, a WW2 cemetary, one of the required tourist-traps, and finally back to Bangkok. One day makes me no expert, but I suspect that two nights might be over-kill.

Alternatively, you can book a similar tour when you arrive at Kanch, which is easily reached by bus. It's a nice small town to stay at for a night or two, as it is very relaxing.
